Bible-thumping k00ks need not apply. This is about abortion.
I was over at Whitewomanblackdog today and Bio’s written an article about a law being passed in South Dakota prohibiting abortion in just about any circumstance. Hell, even if you’re raped you can’t have an abortion and yeah, the rapist could even demand custodial rights (which, in the legally insane world of the USA is a distinct possibility, allowing rapists further emotional violation of women).
Now to set things straight, there is NO REASON for you to need an abortion these days as a method of birth control. First off, getting pregnant is the LEAST of your troubles with having unprotected sex. You could DIE from what you might catch. If you were stupid and I mean, STUPID enough to have unprotected sex, you can now take those “morning-after” pills, just in case. Yeah, and the pill has been around since Jesus wore short pants just about, so there is NO excuse. Young girls, you don’t even have to go to your family Doctor, you can get them from the local family planning clinic and your parents don’t even need to know.
Anyhow, I won’t say I am pro late-term abortion, as I think if you’ve carried the foetus for longer than 4 months and you’ve suddenly decided “d’oh! I think I no longer want this child!”, then you should damn well carry it to term and give it up for adoption. There’s a LOT of people out there who can’t have kids and would give it a fabulous, loving home.
That all being said though, nothing will make my bile rise more than laws being passed by bible-thumping religious zealots based on nothing more than ideological beliefs.
I am tolerant of religion, as long as it isn’t stuffed down my throat (or interferes with what I choose to have done to my nether regions!) and I am totally of the my body, my choice school of thought.
We sit back here in Australia and the US, sneering at Muslim countries where laws are dictated according to religious beliefs (and are often used to disguise the institutionalising of the power of men over women) and yet here they go, insisting a woman carry the child of a rapist in the worst case scenario.
Sure, people in South Dakota could travel out of State and get an abortion, but I would imagine a good percentage of them may not be able to afford to travel and will end up turning to backyard abortion clinics and the death and destruction that will ensue.
These lawmakers are the ones who attend church every Sunday, preach and impose their beliefs on others, but are probably secretly screwing someone behind their wives’ backs, lying and cheating. Fucking hypocrites.

Zipper, I did too at the time, but I was so riled up I decided not to make comment about it.
Andy, I realise that some people believe abortion is wrong, no matter what the reason. I respect their opinion. I’m cranky about a law being passed that effectively tells a woman what she can and can’t do with her body, and I suppose what REALLY fires up my guts is that religious zealots in many MANY cases do NOT practice what they preach. Yeah, it’s wrong to kill an unborn child, but it’s okay for me to screw around behind my wife’s back, perhaps bugger a young boy (then have the church sweep allegations under the carpet) or basically lie and cheat as long as no-one finds out about it.
So, I guess, in terms of this issue, about whether abortion is right or wrong, we would probably have to disagree.
Oh, and the bible-thumping k00ks I was referring to are the type that harrass young women visiting family planning clinics, not you.
By the way, I was raised as a Catholic, though clearly, I don’t agree with ALL of their doctrine.
