I hate spam. With a vengeance bordering on murderous obsession.

What pisses me off the most is that these pricks are hard to track down, and many Internet Service Providers don’t give a rat’s arse about doing anything about them.

I hate how spammers are in league with script kiddies who infect unpatched PC’s with trojans that allow spammers to connect and spew millions of their crap emails worldwide.

I hate how the bastards have added blog comment and trackback spamming to their arsenal of irritations.

I practice extreme blacklisting on my mail server, using Spamcop and SORBS DNSBL’s, as well as blocking the whole of China, Korea and Brazil. Racist? No. I don’t know anyone in these countries and the only email I receive from them is spam. You know what? If a few legitimate emails get lost as collateral damage, I don’t care.

Check out the DNSBLs doing their work an hour ago in my mail server log below. (Click on thumbnail)

I create new email addresses for any websites that I need to register with so if I get spam emails, I can instantly tell from where my address was sold/given/stolen.

Then you get the dickheads who cry “freedom of speech” if their emails are blocked. Here’s the deal. My bandwidth, my server, my rules. I don’t have to accept your email. Period. In Australia, at least, we effectively pay for download bandwidth by usage, so these bastards are costing us money.

With all of this blacklisting (and reporting of each spam email I get), I still get at least 5 spam emails per day.

I can thank the clueless amongst my friends and acquaintances for the spam I do get, for typing-in my email address where they shouldn’t.

These are the people who shouldn’t be allowed on the internet as they don’t have a damn clue what they’re doing. They are also probably the people happily running unpatched PC’s.

Here are a few words to them:

  • DON’T insert any of my email addresses into a “send this link to a friend” field anywhere. If you want to send me a link to something, send it to me via email, not a website.
  • If you’re sending me anything by email and the same email is going to go to other people, do it via BCC, not CC.
  • Don’t forward me jokes or “send this to 6 wonderful women you know” emails. I have yet to receive one that isn’t wasting minutes of my time that I’ll never get back.
  • Don’t send me any e-cards. EVER.
  • Read the guide I wrote for internet newbies about spam that’s on my other site and get clued up!

oh, and patch your damn PC!
